Sketching and Photography trip to the Greenhouse

Last Friday, a few students from the art guild enjoyed a quiet afternoon in USU's greenhouse. The greenhouse staff reserved a room called The Tropicana for us to draw and photograph tropical plants to our hearts desire. A variety of mediums were used including digital paints, holga cameras, and the ol' sketchpad and pencils. Each student left that day feeling inspired and invigorated! We will definitely visit the greenhouse again, so don't miss it next time!

Scott Foster's Gouache Demonstration

Because Scott Foster left USU in order to pursue a teaching job at Sienna College in New York, we invited him to give us one last demonstration. He demonstrated how to create color compositions in Gouache, a medium that is not used often but can have rewarding results.

Plein Air Painting

Several painting students wanted to try their hand at plein air painting this summer, so Matt Larson, MFA candidate and accomplished plein air painter was kind enough to demonstrate his process in Green Canyon.

Paint Palooza!

The weekend before all our final art projects were due, we had a painting marathon complete with potluck dinners, art-related games, and painting into the early hours of the morning.

We started off the weekend with a figure painting session from a live model. However, to liven things up, we worked on a group painting using a paint brush taped to a tree branch.

I've developed a new talent of talking like an high-pitched idiot...it gets him to smile, which makes it all worth it. The Student Warehouse Show Reception Benefit Concert event on February 26th was a huge success! We reached max capacity at one point, everyone got full on bread and coffee/hot chocolate, and all the musicians were incredibly talented! Oh and as always, Professor Dave Smellie's band, Resistor Radio, rocked out with a packed house. Judged by Professor Kevin Muller, the winners of the art exhibit were:

The USU Printmaking Guild was featured in the Herald Journal last Friday:

PRINTMAKING GUILD STUDENTS SLAP DESIGNS ON T-SHIRTS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CONFERENCE

A unique or funny T-shirt can be as valuable to a college student as an iPod or parking permit.

Art majors in Utah State University's Printmaking Guild used that to their advantage Thursday, selling original artworks printed on T-shirts to raise money for an upcoming national conference they hope to attend.

In freezing temperatures, students and a faculty member set up shop outside the Taggart Student Center, complete with a large heated press and dozens of blanks shirts for customers to choose their own design and color.

Customers got to watch the artists transfer the special ink onto the shirts before purchasing them.

Kathy Puzey, assistant professor of printmaking, says the students sell art twice a year to raise money to attract visiting artists and to send students to workshops.

The conference, she explained, helps printmaking students network with other artists.

"Printmaking is a community based medium," she said. "And we're lucky to have organizations that gather together for students to meet other printmakers, listen to panels or go to workshops."

Puzey said several students who attend the Chicago event may present their work to graduate school recruiters.

Art majors with printmaking experience, she added, go on to be freelance artists or work in print shops.

"You do what you love," Puzey said. "And if you really enjoy what you do then you find a way to make it happen."

Nicole Miller, a senior in printmaking, said the decision to put the artists' work on t-shirts was to make it more appealing to students.

"We felt like students would be more willing to purchase our artwork if it was something they could wear and use and not just put on their wall," she said.

Printmaking is a multifaceted art form in which artists use different types of materials that transfer ink onto a variety of media.

Only a certain number of prints come from each original surface and are therefore limited edition pieces of art.

Shirts can also be purchased from 10a.m. to 4p.m. today on the TSC patio.

Now I draw on the computer. I guess I just followed a natural inclination to create monstrous and absurd things.

I can't remember the exact words of my favorite one but it was something to this effect: once your friends realize that you are a serious photographer, dedicated to creating meaningful and beautiful art, they will ask you to shoot their wedding.

Ceramic Guild Holds Annual Holiday Sale

Once again our very own Ceramic Guild has landed in the Utah Statesman last Monday:

The USU Ceramic Guild opened the doors of their studio to the public Friday and Saturday for their annual holiday sale. with prices beginning at $8, the items on display were all created by ceramics students.

This year marked the first time the event was held in the studio. Traditionally, the holiday sale has been held in the TSC, but due to a number of reasons, including scheduling, the event was held on their home turf.

Perry Haas, undergraduate student in the program, said the change of venue had many benefits.

"The sale overall was really good," Haas said. "It was nice to have it in out individual spaces and how off our own work."

Haas recently won best of show for undergraduate level (at the Undergrad Art Exhibit).

Guild President Bobby Free said, "The opening was really social. A lot of faculty and students came."

The guild used this as an opportunity to show the community their studio. Christmas lights were hung up and poinsettias dotted the room.

"We all came together and cleaned the studio and decorated together, " said Mandy Stigant, first-year graduate student. "We all cut out snowflakes, but never got around to hanging them up, but we do have a lot of cool snowflakes that we made."

Along with the usual bowls, plates, mugs and vases were jugs, a lamp, and ceramic rocks.

Ceramic rock creator Stigant described her work and said she picked the rocks for the storytelling that each rock has to give.

"Rocks and river stones. They are a kind of study. I was exploring surface techniques," she said.

Rhonda Egbert, who starts her third year in January, said the graduate students are very accomplished.

"I think the graduate students are high quality and very knowledgeable," she said. A lot of them have been in it for 15 to 20 years."

In addition to graduate students, Egbert said the department has some very accomplished professors.

"John Neely and Dan Marsh and Jo Davis are all very experienced and knowledgeable," Egbert said.

Egbert also said many students have come from many different places because of the faculty's reputation.

Running the kilns requires a tremendous amount of effort, Egbert said. A kiln is like a campfire or bonfire that requires constant attention as well as six truckloads of wood, she said. USU has three wood kilns and a salt and soda kiln, she said.

Sunshine Cobb, second year graduate student, said firing is tricky because of the exact temperatures needed at different stages of the process.

"They go up to 2200-2300 degrees," she said. "There are certain (phases) you need to hit."

They can keep the temperatures fairly close by monitoring temperature gauges placed at certain points inside, Cobb said.

The large ceramic ovens can be tricky and students need to take round the clock shifts for the entire firing period for a few days.

"They're unpredictable, that's a really fun exciting part of it," Egbert said.

Joni Hogge, a sophomore potter, said the uncertainty of the final product is what makes it so exciting.

"Every firing is different," Hogge said. "You can guess what it'll look like, but you never really know."

Ceramics are very important to many of the students.

Stigant said, "When I was a senior in college, I took my first clay class and got hooked.

The Ceramic Guild is also excited for the upcoming Mug Your Valentine sale where they will be selling mugs and hot chocolate.

I don't think I've ever thought about becoming and artist. It's just always been something I've done. As a kid I always was drawing tanks and superheroes in class. Then in high school I was introduced to photoshop, screen printing, and photography. With college came more intense Graphics and my refuge, woodcuts. It's been a pretty natural path for me. There was a time early in my college career that I thought I wanted to be an accountant, then I realized that I don't hate myself that much.

The USU Print Guild landed an article in the Herald Journal about their 8th Annual Print Sale:

USU printmaking students put on annual sale

Utah State University’s printmaking instructor says art students will sometimes wait until the last few semesters of their schooling to take her courses — but at that point, they’re usually hooked.

“People don’t know what printmaking is,” Kathy Puzey said. “But once I get them in here, they love it. There’s such a variety of different mediums and techniques the students can use.”

The assistant professor in printmaking says for many of those students — some of whom are majoring in the art — the annual printmaking sale is a highlight in their school experience.

“It’s a bonus and reward for all their hard work,” Puzey said.

But it’s also a way to learn what life may be like after graduating as an printmaking major.

Printmaking senior Nicole Miller said the event provides a benefit to buyers as well as the artists.

“These were touched by the artist themselves,” she said, pointing to several pieces on a table in a Fine Arts Building classroom.

In its eighth year, the event has grown each year, Puzey said. This year, about 515 pieces went up for sale Thursday evening during the guild’s packed reception. Dozens of prints had sold by the time the sale opened again Friday morning.

Of the revenue raised, 20 percent goes to the Printmaking Guild at the university, while 80 percent goes to the artist. Every print sold is a limited-edition piece.

Community members have been supportive of the event, Miller said. Many come in wanting to know more about the craft.

“They’re always curious about how it’s made,” senior printmaking student Nicole Miller said.

Since Puzey’s favorite method is woodcut, many students choose to use it, but other mediums — like copper plates or silk screens — are also popular.

Puzey has enjoyed watching her students see their work purchased.

“They’re always checking the (receipt) book,” she said.

Miller was nervous to place her first pieces in the sale during previous years because of the personal way in which art is created. But she said it’s worth it.

“It’s an amazing experience,” she said. “You work so hard on something.”

Brittany Peay put about 10 pieces in the show — the first year she’s participated. By Friday afternoon, nearly all of them had sold.

“It was really cool to watch someone pick it up and (then) buy it,” she said.

USU Print Guild 8th Annual Print Sale

Last night was a major event for the USU Print Guild. The place was packed once doors opened at 6pm. Here are some photos to make those of you who didn't come, jealous. You can still partake today from 10am to 7pm! DON'T MISS OUT!

USU Ceramic Guild's Chili Bowl Sale

The USU Ceramic Guild were featured in The Utah Statesman covering an amazing story about their Chili Bowl sale last week where they sold more than 400 bowls:

The Ceramic Guild hosted their annual Chili Bowl fundraiser Wednesday at the TSC, raising money to assist with medical expenses for the wife of a former Art guild President Todd Hayes.

Leanna Hayes, wife of Todd Hayes, had multiple brain aneurysms and had to have brain surgery, which has left the couple in hard financial times, said Ceramic Guild President Bobby Free. Half the proceeds from the fund raiser will be donated to help cover the medical expenses, he said.

"We will be sending a pretty hefty check to Todd and Leanna Hayes," Free said. "Unfortunately, the money we're giving is like a drop of water falling into an ocean, but it's money that they won't have to account for. It feels pretty good to know that we're giving back to two very close friends and alumni of USU."

Free said the guild usually uses all of the proceeds to spend on the National Conference of Education of Ceramic Art and being able to bring in guest artists to do workshops at USU. In past years, some of the proceeds have gone to fund the wood truck. The potters need large amounts of wood to fire up the kilns. The truck allows guild members to get a great deal of wood from assorted sources, including the dump, Free said.

There are 40 members of the Ceramic Guild and each of them made between 10 to 20 bowls to sell.

The bowls were displayed with marked prices from $8 to $20, chili included of course.

They had a great selection this year," said Patti Kohler, a patron of the sale. "A variety of shapes, colors, and patterns were available."

That selection proved to be a boon for the guild.

"Our bowl sale was a complete success. We sold over 400 bowls," Free said.

"We put so much time into just one bowl," one of the potters said. From start to finish the bowls take about three days to make. It isn't a lucrative business scheme, but it certainly is an opportunity for the potters to express themselves and help others become more artistically aware.

The Ceramics Guild hosts several events throughout the year, including the Christmas Sale, which will be held in the ceramics studio Nov. 20 - 22, as well as the "Mugyou Valentine" mug sale.

"By having the sale here (in the ceramics studio in the Fine Arts Center), where the pots are being made, we're opening up our working space for the public to see," Free said. "It can spark questions, get people really involved in what they're purchasing and they'll be able to take more than just a bowl or a jar back home."

Homecoming Street Painting

We completed our first street painting for Homecoming week and have gotten a lot of great feedback! Thanks to all that came! It was a blast and an obvious tradition from now on with the Art Guild. Street Painting Contest

Hey kids!

If you haven't already heard, we are having a contest! Yay! You love contests!

This will be our first year in the long tradition of street painting during homecoming week here at USU. On October 20th, we will be meeting at our spot (TBA) and anyone is welcome to come help out! We want our painting to be the best and win a prize! Ooooh a prize! It's a mystery surprise too because ASUSU, who is sponsoring this event, haven't told us what it is. But here is where YOU come in. We will be having a contest of what the design will be for the street painting.

SUBMIT: Hand in your ideas to Arsenath in the art office.

2) 6:00-9:00: SALT LAKE GALLERY STROLL. Over 25 galleries in downtown Salt Lake open their doors for a night of local art, (free) food, and live music. It's a great chance to familiarize yourself with the art world in Utah...and contact galleries you can show work in.

Hey cats n kittens,

Ya'll as excited as we are to start a new school year? (I can feel the tension headache set in already). Well I can tell you one thing you can be excited about... THE NEW ART GUILD IS NOW IN FULL FORCE AND EFFECT! Woot!

Get out your doodle-clad, embarrassingly empty daily planners, cuz we've got some important dates coming up. First off, our OPENING SOCIAL is scheduled for Friday, September 5th. The place and time aren't currently disclosed (give us a break, we're working on it), so try to pull yourself away from (insert studio here) and the friends you've abandoned for your Bohemian lifestyle and make your way to (soon to be announced location). Do it!

Also, we're very happy to announce that Kathy Puzey, our favorite Printmaking professor and random task undertaker, is our new ART GUILD ADVISOR! Woot woot! We're extremely happy to have her overseeing our madness and that she was willing to re-overpack her already-very-much-overpacked schedule! Thanks, KP!

The best part about having Kathy helping us out is she gets things planned and done. She's planned/taken charge of both the Annual Undergraduate Show and the Annual Print Sale. Both are amazing and ever-increasingly popular events which, without Kathy, probably wouldn't have happened either last year or this year. Which is why we love her. So, those dates are (blow the dust off your date books again):

Nov 6 – 7: Print Sale - FAV 105 (South Printmaking Studio)
Nov 24 – Dec 5th: Undergraduated Show - Tippets Art Gallery

One final thing. We're scrambling to get everyone we can informed about the guild and our events so please tell everyone you know by any means you feel necessary! Performance art, sky banner, smoke signals, we don't care!
