We're still alive. Are you?
Hey, cats n' kittens!
It's MacKay, your newly-elected Art Guild President. Just wanted to wish everyone an amazing summer and I hope you're working/playing as hard as you can! If you're still in Logan, check out the summer figure class.
Until then, God bless and God help me with taking this thing over.
Peace!
-MacKay

ASIDE FROM BEING AT SCHOOL, WORK OR CREATING THINGS, WHAT ELSE DO YOU (like to) DO?
I love being outdoors. Any form of outdoor activity is sure to catch my interest. I also love to read. Getting caught up in a good book is a fabulous way to forget about your current stresses.

WHAT FIRST MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME AN ARTIST?
I love watching people, and seeing how they express themselves. I think when I first got into art, I was also looking for different ways to express myself, and art is one of the most meaningful expressions I've discovered.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?
I would like to eventually teach, so after working in the field for a number of years to gain experience, I would like to come back and get my Graduate Degree and work toward teaching on a college level.

ASIDE FROM BEING AT SCHOOL, WORK OR CREATING THINGS, WHAT ELSE DO YOU DO? I absolutely love to play with my little boy. I've developed a new talent of talking like an high-pitched idiot...it gets him to smile, which makes it all worth it. I also love curling up in bed with a good book, watching the Food Channel at other people's houses (we don't have TV), and running/swimming.
WHAT FIRST MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME AN ARTIST? When my 1st grade teacher told me I did a good job coloring my construction-paper teddy bear, my career was set for life. I'm a sucker for compliments.
TOP 5 BOOKS:
The Old Kingdom series by Garth Nix
The Taming of the Shrew by Shakespeare
Prodigal Journey by Linda Paulson Adams
The Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin
FAVORITE MOVIES: Unless I'm with friends, I don't care to watch movies. I have better things to do with my time.
FAVORITE MUSICIANS: Whatever Brandt and Carrie play in the painting studio. I don't pay enough attention to current musicians to know who's making the music.
BEST ADVICE YOU'VE EVER RECEIVED OR FAVORITE QUOTE: "Nothing is impossible." (If you put enough time and desire to get it done.)
WHAT'S YOUR ADVICE TO OTHERS? "Just do it." If I wait too long, my brain comes up with a billion excuses. It's better if I don't give it time to think too hard.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS? Making a ton of paintings, and hopefully selling them...neither my closet nor my parent's basement can store much more.

Art With Sleeves

The USU Printmaking Guild was featured in the Herald Journal last Friday:
PRINTMAKING GUILD STUDENTS SLAP DESIGNS ON T-SHIRTS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CONFERENCE
A unique or funny T-shirt can be as valuable to a college student as an iPod or parking permit.
Art majors in Utah State University's Printmaking Guild used that to their advantage Thursday, selling original artworks printed on T-shirts to raise money for an upcoming national conference they hope to attend.
In freezing temperatures, students and a faculty member set up shop outside the Taggart Student Center, complete with a large heated press and dozens of blanks shirts for customers to choose their own design and color.
Customers got to watch the artists transfer the special ink onto the shirts before purchasing them.
Kathy Puzey, assistant professor of printmaking, says the students sell art twice a year to raise money to attract visiting artists and to send students to workshops.
The conference, she explained, helps printmaking students network with other artists.
"Printmaking is a community based medium," she said. "And we're lucky to have organizations that gather together for students to meet other printmakers, listen to panels or go to workshops."
Puzey said several students who attend the Chicago event may present their work to graduate school recruiters.
Art majors with printmaking experience, she added, go on to be freelance artists or work in print shops.
"You do what you love," Puzey said. "And if you really enjoy what you do then you find a way to make it happen."
Nicole Miller, a senior in printmaking, said the decision to put the artists' work on t-shirts was to make it more appealing to students.
"We felt like students would be more willing to purchase our artwork if it was something they could wear and use and not just put on their wall," she said.
Printmaking is a multifaceted art form in which artists use different types of materials that transfer ink onto a variety of media.
Only a certain number of prints come from each original surface and are therefore limited edition pieces of art.
Shirts can also be purchased from 10a.m. to 4p.m. today on the TSC patio.

WHAT FIRST MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME AN ARTIST?
I used to draw on walls when I was little. My grandparents thought it was a nuisance. They'd point at my messy scribbles and complain to my mother (in Korean) about my premature graffiti. Now I draw on the computer. I guess I just followed a natural inclination to create monstrous and absurd things.

I actually don't listen to music regularly. Just to answer this question, I had toreview my iTunes list (shame on me). I'm extremely selective with music, and even if I like a band it's only one or two of their songs. I don't even care for bands. I prefer music from films and soundtracks, and they're usually very depressing. With that being said, my top picks are:

BEST ADVICE YOU'VE EVER RECEIVED OR FAVORITE QUOTE:
"A man would do well to carry a pencil in his pocket and write down the thoughts of the moment. Those that come unsought for are commonly the most valuable and should be secured, because they seldom return."

WHAT'S YOUR ADVICE TO OTHERS?
Always be kind and respectful to others, even if you're having the crappiest day of your life. You never know what it'll lead to or how it'll pay off. Smile excessively. Dare to stand out. Make a (good) lasting impression. A great portfolio is nothing without a glowing personality (one that complements your work).

DO YOU HAVE A BLOG OR WEBSITE?
I will after this semester! But for the time being, find me on facebook ;)
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?
The future terrifies me. Just the thought of paying bills and cooking dinner gives me anxiety. I really just want to be happy and wake up excited for whatever the day brings. Maybe I'll be a mom. Maybe I'll still be working at JJ Cole. Maybe in ten years I'll reminisce about this survey. As long as I'm with Ben, the rest are trifles.
